Earth science is the study
of the nature of the earth and other planets. It is an
exciting science with many interesting and practical applications.
Earth scientists are also
called geoscientists. Some
Earth scientists use their knowledge of the Earth to locate and develop energy
and mineral resources. Some use their knowledge about Earth processes such as
volcanoes, earthquakes, and hurricanes to plan communities that will not expose
people to these dangerous events.
The Four Earth Sciences:
Many
different sciences are used to learn about the Earth; however, the four basic
areas of Earth science study are:
Importance
of Earth Science:
Earth is our home. We rely upon it for our
existence in many different ways. Its resources feed us and provide the
materials of our way of life. Understanding these systems and how they interact
with us is vital for our survival. Earth Science Literacy is especially
important at this time in history. Our climate is changing, and that change is being caused by human
activity. Earth scientists recognized this problem and will play a key role in
efforts to resolve it.
Earth Science Careers:
If you are a pre-college student, you can start preparing for a
career in Earth science by enrolling in the college preparation program and
doing well in all of your courses. Some universities offers BS programs in geology, meteorology,
oceanography or astronomy and also a master program .
Students who graduate with a Bachelor of
Science degree in earth sciences are qualified for employment in a wide range
of careers, including resource management, geotechnical and environmental
consulting, urban and rural planning, petroleum and mining industries, state
and federal agencies such as the USGS, USFS, NOAA, EPA, and DEQ, teaching in
K-12 schools (with additional teaching certificate), and as laboratory
technicians, professional geologists, geophysicists, or geochemists.
