Introduction to Civil Engineering Materials

Civil Engineering Materials is Building and construction material used during the construction of the building, designing structures and developing infrastructure projects including bridges, dams, pipelines, and roadways.

There are two types of construction materials :
  1. Natural:   →   Timber, clay/soil, Rock and gravel.
  2. Artificial: →   Bricks, cement, Lime, stones, Ceramics, Glass, Paints /Varnishes, Plastics, Tiles, marble and granites.
The modern civil Engineers needs to deal with traditional construction materials as well as advanced materials. Traditional construction materials, such as timber, steel, asphalt and portland cement, concrete are often used in many construction projects. Modern materials, such as polymers and composites are making headway into the construction industry.
  1. Mechanical Properties of Materials:
  • Strength
  • Elasticity
  • Plasticity
  • Ductility
  • Brittleness
  • Malleability
  • Toughness
  • Hardness
  • Stiffness
  • Creep
